Mary and Richard Haines

After raising a family of four children and with Richard retired we wondered what God had in store for us next, having always been heavily involved in our parish church and ministry, and community activities in our town for over 30 years. In 2010 a narrowboat holiday introduced us to a slower pace of life and from then I expressed a desire to one day live on a narrowboat for a prolonged period of time. ‘Prayer boat’ resonated with us and travelling as much of the network as possible, so aiming to cruise from about late March to early November. Having sold our family home and after purchasing a flat we felt able to begin our mission, whatever that turns out to be! We rented a boat for six months in October 2020 and survived a winter quite happily but the boat we then purchased is only 43ft (enabling us to travel the entire network) so we feel we need a bit more space in the colder months! After enjoying a fellowship weekend with the BCF we met some of the Canal Ministries team and felt that God was aligning our vision with theirs. As we travel the waterways, our prayer is that God connects us to those he wants us to meet and spend time with, listening to their stories and praying as appropriate. Sometimes it is with old friends, fellow christians, or more often than not, it is with strangers but our hope is that God will use us to his purposes and that we can spread a little of His faith, joy, light and peace as we journey on, into the unknown. It is exciting, unpredictable and full of surprise and however hard we try to make a plan, we are learning to hold plans loosely and to go with the flow!
