We thought it would be good to share what it is like to have our home taken out of the water and worked on.
As it says on the video, it is a one of those nerve jangling moments when we are putting our full trust in the expertise of others. In the ten years we have lived on Kairos this is the 5th time it has been out. Blacking only lasts 2-3 years and as the hull is the most important part of the boat we want to make sure it is well maintained.
This time we had her out for 2 weeks because the roof needed repainting, the water tank needed a new specialist coat of paint that is water regulation approved and whilst out we painted the gunwales, and hull. To keep costs down we do as much as we can ourselves but we employed a painter to do the roof. We also had the help of our friends Roger, Jo and Dan which meant we managed to do all we needed in the time we had. We are so thankful for good friends!
As you can see from the video we removed all the old paint from the roof and started again. This takes several days as between each task you need to allow time for dust to settle and then paint to set. It had a two pack primer as the initial coat to give a durable first coat. Some welding also had to be done to weld up holes where aerials had been on the boat but have been removed as technology has changed.
